Yr 1 - English and Maths (1)

At Nields Academy we believe that all pupils can achieve in mathematics. We believe that at each stage of learning, children should be able to demonstrate deep, conceptual understanding and build on this over time. We want children to be able to not only recall and use the maths taught, but also to be able to transfer and apply it in different contexts, being able to reason and problem solve.

We aim for our pupils to:

  • Become fluent in basic mathematical skills, increasing in complexity over time
  • Develop their conceptual understanding so they can improve their recall skills and apply knowledge accurately
  • Develop their ability to reason, justify and prove using mathematical language
  • Learn the skills to break down complex steps into simpler ones
